Although the Teatro Massimo was designed by Gian Battista Basile around the year 1868, it was his son, Ernesto, who did the building. Translated, the inscription above the door reads that art both renews and reveals a people. Closed for 23 years due to neglect, the theatre has re-opened and is reclaiming its reputation as one of the great opera houses in Italy.
